Cyprus And The European Union

Cyprus and the European Union

Cyprus's EU Membership

A Divided Island

Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004, despite being a divided island. The northern part of the island is controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is not recognised by the international community. The southern part of the island is controlled by the Republic of Cyprus, which is a member of the EU.

EU Legislation in Cyprus

EU legislation is suspended in Northern Cyprus until a final settlement of the Cyprus problem. This means that the people of Northern Cyprus do not have the same rights and benefits as the people of Southern Cyprus.

Timeline of Cyprus's EU Membership

  • 2004 - Cyprus joins the EU but does so as a divided island
  • 2008 - Cyprus adopts the euro
  • The symbolic Ledra Street crossing between the north and south of the island is opened

Conclusion

Cyprus's membership of the EU is a complex issue. The island is divided, and EU legislation is not fully implemented in the north. However, the EU has played a positive role in the peace process, and it is hoped that one day Cyprus will be reunited and fully integrated into the EU.
